Adventures in Iceland: A Luxurious 4-Day Itinerary

Iceland offers an extraordinary blend of luxury and adventure for those seeking an unforgettable travel experience. From cascading waterfalls to stunning black sand beaches and geothermal spas, this Nordic island caters to both indulgence and exploration. In this blog post, I’m sharing my recent 4-day itinerary that combines the best of both worlds, allowing you to immerse yourself in luxurious accommodations and amenities while embarking on thrilling adventures.

Iceland offers two distinct and captivating experiences depending on whether you visit in the summer or winter. Each season presents its own unique charms, landscapes, and activities, making Iceland a year-round destination with something special to offer no matter the time of year. In the summer months, Iceland experiences the phenomenon known as the “midnight sun.” This extraordinary natural occurrence results in extended periods of daylight, almost 24 hours of daylight. Winter provides the best chance to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), a celestial display of dancing colors across the night sky. I’ve visited in both February and June, and this itinerary is from my recent trip in June.

For this itinerary I highly recommend renting a car. It is easy to drive in Iceland and most rental cars will come with the option for Internet or a GPS system if you are concerned about Wifi, but be cautious of speeding.

Note: 2024 is the year to chase the magic of the Northern Lights in Iceland! If you are visiting primarily with the goal of seeing the Northern Lights, while it’s possible to see them in the capital, Reykjavik, it’s recommend to drive away from light pollution to maximize your chances. We recommend booking a hotel with a special “wake-up service” so you don’t miss your chance to see this incredible natural wonder. On our own bucket list this year is staying at Hotel Rangá.

Day 1: Sky Lagoon and Reykjavik Exploration

Morning

After landing in Reykjavik, start your day at Sky Lagoon, a geothermal spa located on the outskirts of Reykjavik. This is a convenient stop between the airport and downtown Reykjavik and offers an opportunity to relax and freshen up before the day. I recommend the seven-step ritual package so that you can experience the beautiful views from the sauna (see picture below).

Next, head to the heart of Reykjavik and immerse yourself in the vibrant charm of Rainbow Street. Walk through the area, admiring the colorful houses that line the streets. As you start to feel the morning hunger kick in, it’s time for freshly baked pastries and coffee at Braud & Co, a beloved local bakery. Their cinnamon rolls are a must-try; one bite, and you’ll understand why everyone raves about them. Next, visit the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church. For the best views of the city, don’t miss the chance to ascend to the top of the tower. You can purchase tickets right at the church’s entrance, and the panoramic views are simply breathtaking, especially on a clear day.

Afternoon

If you’re hungry again, Rok is the perfect place to visit for lunch. Just across the street from Hallgrimskirkja church, Rok is known for its delicious brunch options that combine Icelandic flavors with a modern twist. Once you’ve finish lunch, walk around Laugavegur street. This bustling shopping street is famous for its trendy boutiques, souvenirs, unique local crafts, and food and drinks options. During the warmer months, the street comes alive with charming outdoor dining options.

Evening

If you’re a fan of cocktails, make your way to Lebowski Bar for a taste of their famous White Russian. The quirky atmosphere, inspired by the film “The Big Lebowski,” adds to the fun of enjoying your favorite concoctions. Skuli Craft Bar offers a sophisticated cocktail experience. The mixologists here are true artists, creating concoctions that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. For beer enthusiasts, Einstok Brewer’s Lounge is a must-visit.

For dinner, if you prefer a more laid-back dinner experience, make your way to Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, a legendary hot dog stand loved by locals and tourists alike. Order the Icelandic hot dog with ‘eina með öllu’ (one with everything) to enjoy it in true Icelandic style. For a more upscale dining option, end your day with a dinner reservation at Apotek Restaurant. This elegant restaurant offers a fusion of Icelandic and European cuisines, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

We opted to stay at an Airbnb in Reykjavik on day 1 and 2. I recommend a location in downtown Reykjavik so that you can easily get around by walking. If you are renting a car, look for a hotel or Airbnb that offers parking so that you don’t have to worry about street parking.

Day 2: Driving Tour

Morning

Rise early to make the most of your day. We set off from Reykjavik at 6:00 AM and made our first stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a breathtaking cascade that allows for a unique experience—hiking behind the curtain of falling water. I recommend wearing rain gear (including on your feet!) if you plan to go behind the waterfall. Before leaving, follow the pathway to find Gljúfrabúi waterfall. In order to reach the waterfall, you must walk through the gorge in front of it.

Next, venture to Skogafoss waterfall, known for its impressive height and power. The sheer force of the water thundering down is awe-inspiring, and a climb to the top rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

The next stop is Reynisfjara Beach (Game of Thrones fans will recognize this stop!), and as you approach the beach, you will be immediately struck by the contrasting landscape of black sand and the dramatic basalt columns rising from the sea. The basalt columns, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, stand like imposing sentinels along the shore. It’s essential to be mindful of the tide and stay within designated safe areas for a safe and enjoyable visit.

Afternoon

It’s time for lunch in Vik, a charming coastal village, at Black Crust Pizzeria. The pizza was delicious and the location convenient. I highly recommend!

The last activity for the day was our absolute favorite: ice climbing. We opted for the Solheimajokull ice climbing and glacier hiking tour with Troll Expeditions. The expert guide led us on our ice climbing experience, where we climbed frozen walls of the glacier. It’s an unforgettable activity and I highly recommend!

Evening

After ice climbing, jump back into the car and head back to Reykjavik for the night. For a quick, delicious, and affordable dinner I recommend Icelandic Street Food.

Golden Circle for First-Timers

If this is your first trip to Iceland, consider exploring the Golden Circle, a collection of three locations in Southwest Iceland. Thingvellir National Park offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a Silfra Fissure Snorkeling Tour. Float between two continents in crystal clear water, an experience unlike any other. The Geysir Geothermal Area has hot springs and geysers erupting. And no visit to the Golden Circle is complete without visiting Gullfoss Waterfall.

Day 3: Blue Lagoon and Relaxation

Morning & Afternoon

Start your day with breakfast at Sandholt Bakery with delicious options like avocado toast and waffles with berries.

After breakfast, check out of your hotel or Airbnb and make your way to the stunning Silica Hotel, a hotel nestled in lava fields. The hotel’s tranquil ambiance blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature, providing an incredibly relaxing stay.

The highlight of the afternoon awaits – the renowned Blue Lagoon. As part of our hotel reservation at the Silica Hotel we booked the retreat spa, which includes 5 hour exclusive entry to the Retreat Spa and the Blue Lagoon. Learn more about this opportunity here.

Evening

Hop on the free and convenient shuttle from Silica Hotel back to the Blue Lagoon to enjoy dinner at Lava Restaurant. This award-winning restaurant boasts panoramic views of the volcanic surroundings, providing a truly unique dining setting. We enjoyed the dinner, but we were really wow’ed by the views.

Day 4: Silica Lagoon and ATV Adventure

Morning

After enjoying the complimentary breakfast (which was amazing), take a dip one last time in the Silica Lagoon. Silica Hotel guest have unlimited access to the Blue Lagoon, so if you have extra time, visit the Blue Lagoon again!

Afternoon

Before heading to the airport, enjoy an exciting 1-hour ATV tour with 4×4 Adventures Iceland. You will traverse rugged terrains and have the opportunity to see stunning landscapes (and have a lot of fun!). They also offer a 2-hour tour, but we all agreed that 1 hour felt like the perfect amount of time.
